Reopening of the Petersfield Hub

Despite the rain we had a great day on Wednesday to promote the reopening of the Information Hub at Petersfield Station. Around 40 people turned out to sample the amazing home grown produce of the Petersfield Community Garden Group (much from the station forecourt planters) and view the information available to plan a great visit to Petersfield and the South Downs National Park.

Volunteers help tidy up Petersfield Station


Recently volunteers from the Department for Transport lent a hand at Petersfield Station as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility duties.

Amidst light and then heavy rain showers 9 volunteers came out of their London office and really got their hands dirty by clearing grass, laying out wood chippings around planters and painting the Hub Information office.

London Waterloo Christmas Community Rail stand

Travel and Tourism Hub opens at Petersfield Station


The East Hampshire Community Rail Partnership has now opened its pop up Travel and Tourism Hub in the old Parcels Office at Petersfield Station.

Open 10.00 - 15.00 Wednesdays to Sundays the Hub is staffed by friendly and knowledgeable people keen to promote where you can visit in the Petersfield and South Downs National Park area by sustainable transport. The service is free and carries maps, leaflets and information about local events. It is also currently housing a mini display of artefacts kindly on loan from Petersfield Museum.

A name has now been chosen for our Zany Zebra!


As you will be aware the Three Rivers Community Rail Partnership, East Hampshire Community Rail Partnership and South West Trains have banded together to sponsor a Marwell Zoo Zany Zebra as part of the proposed 40+ zebra trail around Southampton this Summer.

Films showing at The New Savoy Cinema in Petersfield


Located at the corner of Swan Street and Chapel Street the original Savoy Cinema was built on the site of the Petersfield Electric Cinema which was demolished in 1935. Changing use from cinema through bingo hall and nightclub, the Savoy Cinema was eventually demolished in the 2010s. Since closure a group of volunteers decided to continue showing films and located themselves at the Festival Theatre where they show two films on the same day once a month. The newly formed group decided to show films under the name of The New Savoy Cinema.

Upcoming films include: Everest and Suffragette (Tuesday 26 January), Pan, Amy and The Martian (Tuesday 16 February), Sunset Song and Lady in a van (Tuesday 22 March), and The Dressmaker and Brooklyn (Tuesday 26 April).

Each ticket costs £5 only and can be bought through One Tree Book Shop in Lavant Street, Petersfield or Petersfield Town Council.

The Association of Community Rail Partnerships held their annual dinner and awards ceremony last week in Torquay. Some Interesting Rail Economic Information


Railfuture’s Deputy Director of Policy, Norman Bradbury, has published a “Summary of Rail Industry Economics 2014-15”.

Norman says that the financial performance of the national rail industry continues to improve, helped by ongoing growth in passenger volume. Figures released by the ORR show that for the fifth consecutive year premium payments paid to government by Train Operating Companies (TOCs) exceeded total government subsidy paid to TOCs, giving a net surplus of £802.2m.

New South Downs Rambler bus service launched

From Saturday 4 July together with the South Downs National Park and the East Hampshire Community Rail Partnership, Go South Coast will be launching the South Downs Rambler bus service. The service will run initially Saturday, Sunday and Public Holidays between 4 July and 31 August. Liphook Station looks blooming good for summer

With sponsorship from the East Hampshire Community Rail Partnership Liphook in Bloom have replanted the hanging baskets at Liphook Station and they look stunning!

Happy Holidays at Hollycombe

Hollycombe Working Steam Museum on the Hampshire and Surrey border offers a true ‘three generations’ visit, with a traditional fairground, train rides, working steam engines and woodland walks. With the summer holidays now upon us the popular attraction has extended opening of Wednesdays to Sundays between 30th July – 25th August. Liss Station volunteers

Last week volunteers from Liss Village converged on the Station forecourt to give a rather unsightly flower bed a makeover. See for yourself below the fruits of their labour. This is the first stage of improvements at the station where it is hoped that with support from South West Trains and the South Downs National Park there will be additional seating, plants, information boards, signs to local walking and cycle routes provided.

May Travel Promotion

Guided walk from Petersfield station

There is a guided walk on Saturday 22 March 2014 from Petersfield station forecourt that states at 10.15am.

The start is timed to link in with anyone arriving by train at Petersfield Station. The walk will aim to finish at Liss station in time for catching a train back to Petersfield or further afield.
